I have been a competitive cyclist for almost forty years, ten years at the regional and national level. Over the decades I have had more than forty winning lead-outs. Of course, in my mind, a good lead-out is every bit as beautiful as a sprint win, although they usually coexist quite happily. In the early 80s I began training with power with Eddie Borysewicz and a Monark ergometer at the OTC. Personally, I was the manager and principal owner of Morgul Bismark Bicycles in Boulder, Colorado, in the 1990s.

Coaching philosophy

Sooner or later, often by accident, every rider has a good day: a day when the pedals spin in a whir and the power flows. Having that power on the right day and having fun while getting there is what training and peaking are all about.

I coach with power (of course), but I also coach many riders with heart rate only, and some with nothing but tape on their handlebars (no power, no heart rate, no speed).

Notable achievements
  • 35+ wins as a Cat 1 racer, including multiple state championships and qualifying for Olympic trials and Pan Am trials
  • Winner of three New Zealand North Island masters championships
  • 30+ wins, several state championships, and national podiums as a master’s rider
Athlete testimonial

Everything is going great with Randy. He has been very patient and very helpful. I feel like my fitness is improving evidenced by how I feel after the ride (and increased wattage).  I don't feel totally gassed after the ride (even though I am putting in a pretty big effort). I am able to function and do typical lifestyle maintenance type activities (i.e., yard work, kids sporting events, etc....).  - Jeff, Colorado

Please give recognition to my coach, Randy for his work. I can't say enough for his consistent communication and tireless work that he puts into helping me train to be a better cyclist. Under his advice this past year, we began tweaking some training concepts and I really noticed some positive change this year in my riding and racing. I was seeing good results in what I was able to accomplish on training rides. This then transformed into seeing results in races. I cannot wait to see what Randy and I can accomplish for next season. He deserves my credit! - John, Vermont

Randy is awesome to work with. Totally got me motivated again. Super great guy. Awesome!  - Patti, Oregon

I've had many coaches. Randy gets it. He listens, adjusts as life changes. I followed his workouts and got stronger and stronger. Also became a better racer. - Fred Bray, Ontario

I have enjoyed working with Randy. He has helped me regain a sense of enjoyment in this sport that had been missing for a long time. I even began to put together some decent results that have been absent for a while. Looking forward to the work ahead with Randy as we push toward some goals.  - John Hackett, Vermont

I have been working with Randy for about a year. In that time, I went from a Cat 4 with some potential to a Cat 2 in 'cross (my focus) and a Cat 3 on the road after a handful of races. Randy is methodical and calm and is willing to adapt the plan to get the most out each week. He also understands that I have numerous life constraints and so helps me maximize the quality in each workout. His personality and approach are hugely appreciated!  - Matt Klick

Our relationship has been the best cycling investment. It's getting me over the finish line faster than any hardware ever did. - Sy Nayman, Colorado
