Background

I started racing bikes in 1985 as a form of cross training for XC skiing, and immediately fell in love with it. I have raced as a Cat. 1 or Pro since 1991. I participated in the prestigious amateur Het Volk, 3 US Olympic Trials, 3 US Pro Championships and raced both domestically and abroad, with time spent in Holland, Belgium, and Ireland. I retired from racing in 2003, and immediately got into coaching.

Since I started out in rural New Hampshire and before the advent of the internet, I did not have access to coaching/advising as a part of my training. I wanted to make coaching accessible to more athletes.

Coaching philosophy

I take the “10,000-foot view” when working with athletes. I consider both the athlete and their environment, as a whole, to determine how this influences their training and racing. Very few athletes live in the vacuum of training, so it’s important to be aware of the accompanying responsibilities that an athlete might have.

Notable Achievements and Specialties
  • My twin brother and I won the Tandem National 40km TT in 2003.
  • I also had the privilege of coaching both the CU Boulder and Colorado State University collegiate cycling teams to National Championship victories.
