Cycling, Triathlon and Endurance Sport Coach
Stephen McGregor, Ph.D.
Steve is a former USCF category I road racer who has been training endurance athletes for 10 years, and has a Doctorate in Exercise Physiology. There are very few individuals in the business with this combination of practical experience and scientific knowledge.
In college, Steve was a soccer player and found cycling while rehabbing from an injury. He started competing in triathlons and bicycle races, but soon found his true affinity was for cycling. Concentrating on cycling, he climbed the ranks in USCF racing while pursuing a M.S. degree in Molecular Biology. Later, he competed as a category I racer for several years while studying for his doctoral degree. He still competes as a USCF category II racer and in masters events. Steve is also an avid cross country skier and in the winter has competed in skate ski marathons.
Currently, Steve is Director of the Applied Physiology Laboratory at Eastern Michigan University, and has published and presented numerous research papers examining muscle physiology, as well as nutritional supplements. His laboratory also regularly performs VO2max and lactate threshold testing on runners, cyclists and triathletes.
When training cyclists, Steve prefers to use power based programs and performance assessment techniques. He has personally been training using a power meter for 10 years, and has been helping cyclists and triathletes train with power for several years. He is also a proponent of strength training for some athletes, and strongly recommends it for athletes in certain disciplines.
As a professional with a family, Steve is familiar with rigors of balancing training and racing with other responsibilities. He knows that each individual has his or her own training needs, as well as limits. He makes sure the athlete gets the most out of their training without going overboard. He takes into consideration each individual’s time commitments, time available for training, and their personal goals to devise a training program that is optimal for that individual.
Steve will apply his practical experience, in conjunction with sound scientific principles to help you progress to the next level.
