Background

I have been an enthusiastic cyclist since childhood. Riding with my father at a young age introduced me to the world form a bicycle; some of the best memories I have are just endless miles with my dad! This passion has only grown into adulthood, where I still ride and race with my father and my son in local and regional events. I started coaching as a way to figure out how to help myself and my son get faster on the bike. I liked learning about how the body works and continued that interest into coaching and earning my degree in Exercise Science. I still race in mountain bike cross country, in the single-speed category and short track as well as marathon mountain bike. I have balanced racing and training with a military career and family responsibilities, so I understand the challenges facing the amateur athlete or seasoned racer.

Coaching philosophy

There are few things that can clear your mind like a good hard training session. All mental and physical energy needs to be focused on completing tasks and achieving your objectives - You get what you give. Work hard and it will pay off.

Athlete Testimonials

"The BEST money I've ever spent in cycling. I'm a super-busy, father, husband, physical therapist, bike fitter, cycling coach, who owns and runs a physical therapy clinic and a 300 member cycling club.. I'm busy....and still wanted to reach my goals. How do I do that? Mike knew right where I was coming from. My goal was to train as little and as efficiently as possible to keep getting faster, reach my goals all while balancing the other areas of my life. Simply, Mike has been the MOST important factor in my success over the last 4 years which included two solid cyclocross seasons and eventually getting my buckle by finishing the 2015 Leadville 100 on my single speed!! He's been a major factor in "keeping the balance." Thanks Mike! You're the man! "  Mike Beretta , PT, CSCS

"Training with Mike Bolza as my coach has increased my performance while reducing injury, sickness, and training time. I self-trained for four years and was plagued by constant illness and over-use injuries. Mike’s guidance has increased the effectiveness of the time I do spend training while reducing the time I spend off for injuries and illness. He is also willing to spend as much time with me as I need to accomplish my goals, like sagging a 12 hour ride in one day. Mike has the knowledge and experience to help me work around life challenges like my heart surgery this year and weeks of travel for work. I can accomplish my goals with Mike’s help and enjoy doing it, like making the podium in fifth place at the Dirty Kanza" Jennifer Talley

"Like so many others, I was always one of those long-time riders who would come out and compete once or twice every year or three, when a race was held at the “home” trail. I’d pretty much always podium in my cat 3 age division, but there was inevitably one or two fit, fast guys who would just walk away from the pack. And every year I’d vow that I’d train seriously for the next season.

With my work schedule I may travel to Europe, to India, back to The U.S., and then to Asia all within a week or two. I’m the client-from-hell from a coaching standpoint. Trying to balance fatigue/recovery, and simultaneously get in quality, bike relevant workouts on whatever stationary devices are available at numerous hotels is a constant battle. It requires an enormous amount of energy, creativity, flexibility, communication and constant adjustment from a coach. This is the critical juncture where coaching science meets art and intuition. It is my firm belief that while this coaching skill may be enhanced by experience, it is largely an “either a coach has it or he does not” type of ability. Coach Mike has this intuitive skill in spades. Mike always comes up with a creative solution to get the most out of even the most difficult travel weeks and is ALWAYS on top of fatigue management. Amazingly, I’ve landed in the U.S. extremely fatigued, but with a difficult workout scheduled and received a text from coach Mike amending the workout to account for the fatigue, without any prompting from me whatsoever. Anybody can call themselves a coach, but the superlative ability Mike demonstrates day in and day out without fail is what separates coach with natural ability from a cookbook wannabe.

With Mike’s astute coaching I was able to finish the season with a strong, decisive victory at the last race and the Oklahoma Tour de Dirt Series Cat 3 50+ Championship! The amazing thing about this was the fact that entire series was a tooth-and-nail battle to the last race against a seasoned athlete who probably was superior to myself in terms of natural athletic ability. Without Coach Mike this would’ve never been possible." Mark Richards, Team Phoenix
