I have been using Peaks Coaching Group and more specifically Karen Macken as a tri coach for about 2 months. For me the hardest task as a runner (trying to become a triathlete) was to put it all together. I really had a hard time fitting in my bike and swim workouts. Like most runners I added the 2 sports on top of running, dropped all “junk” running miles. Unfortunately it is not that easy. I did lots of high intensity workouts in all 3 sports, which was wearing me out and did not allow me to do higher volume workouts to build the necessary endurance base needed for the long distances I was training for. Karen, who is a very experienced and enthusiastic triathlete (nationally ranked) herself, helped me to put it all together.
First she helped me build a yearly plan and focus on my key objectives (completing a first half ironman). Then she really focused on building my base endurance or aerobic capacity. It is clear today that with Karen’s helped I improved significantly my aerobic base in all 3 sports, even in running. My pace and power output over HR has improved significantly. Karen is well versed in all the tools needed in analyzing power files and HR files. And she is doing a great job taking me through my own files. She analyzes my files every week and designs next week’s program accordingly. In addition Karen is very approachable. She is very prompt in getting back with any questions I have either via phone or email. In net my swimming, biking and running have improved significantly since being coached by Karen. I completed my first, sprint-tri (as a C race) in 1:15. She also gives me all these little hints to improve my transition times … and it works. I almost halfed my transition times versus my first duathlon I did earlier this year.
So all I can say is thank you Karen, for helping me getting it together. I know with her help I will eventually reach my goal of breaking the 5 hours in a half-ironman.
