Coaching Focus: Triathlon, Running

Background

I have always been passionate about being outdoors and physically active, and triathlon is a wonderful place where these two meet. As a child I would participate in any activity available to the point of exhaustion. My family used to ski together, and after everyone was tired and ready to be done my brother and I would scarf down some food and head right back out to ski more until we were kicked off the slopes. I have always been interested in being the best that I can be at whatever the activity at hand is, studying how those that are better execute the skills and reflecting on how I can improve. As I continued to grow I got interested in building strength, spending a great deal of time lifting weights and running no more than a mile here and there. When I met my wife she was training for the Chicago Olympic distance triathlon and I agreed to spectate and serve as her sherpa. Watching her walk down the chute and jump in the water when her wave was called, I was hooked immediately. I bought my first road bike a short time later and sixteen years later I have the privilege of helping others that are traveling down this path too.

I have fifteen years of racing under my belt, including all major triathlon distances; sprint, olympic, half ironman and full ironman. I have completed the Chattanooga 70.3, Steelhead 70.3, Madison Full Ironman, and have competed in age group nationals for the olympic distance twice. In addition to triathlon, I enjoy distance running and have completed the New York and Chicago marathons. I have raced many other smaller races in addition to those listed above, and each race has been an opportunity to learn and grow. Each race course is different and each day offers new conditions to contend with. A goal of mine as a coach is to work through these potential scenarios with athletes and make sure they feel prepared regardless of what the day holds.

Coaching Philosophy

I want to coach to help people realize their full potential while having fun along the way. I also want to help athletes get the most out of their workouts with the limited time that real life provides.

My favorite part about coaching is seeing people make breakthroughs either in performance or getting over mental hurdles.

Success in coaching to me is keeping my athletes happy, healthy and wanting more.

Athlete Testimonials

Brian coached me for the New York Marathon, my fourth race at this distance and first time having a coach. I learned a great deal from him that helped me shift the way I train, and while I was hesitant at first to embrace his advice, the results produced were undeniable! I felt great throughout my training and race day was awesome. I am having him coach me again for another marathon and have set goals that I never would have thought I could do before having his help.
