Background

Cycling has always been a part of my life. From my earliest memories, I have been on a bike of one sort or another. From my early years on my Schwinn with a sissy bar, three-speed shifter, and a playing card flipping in my to spokes, to my first Raleigh 10-speed for my 10th birthday. That was when 10-speed referred to the total number of gear combinations, not the number of cogs on the rear cassette. I dabbled in mountain-biking, cross-country touring and bikepacking before I found racing.

My racing career started as part of a weight loss journey. Long story made short – I got out of the Air Force to pursue a master’s degree and ballooned up to 325 lbs during that time. I stayed at that weight for some time before health concerns forced me to lose the extra pounds. I found a coach who helped me in this process and also introduced me to racing. I have had a few successes with 1st place finishes in the Tour of Corsicana Stage Race and the Vuelta de Llano stage race along with a number of top ten finishes in other Texas races. I have recently embraced gravel racing and have enjoyed a 1st overall and numerous 4th overall places in the last 6 months. BTW – I am only a little more than half my previous weight.

Coaching Philosophy – Passion driven – Data Informed Goal Achievement

Throughout my adult life, I have been a teacher of one sort or another. I was a language instructor in the Air Force, I taught Math, Science, and Computer Science in public school, and have even taught bicycle maintenance as part of a long-term (10 years) part time job with a bicycle shop. All this to say is that I thoroughly enjoy helping people in their journey to improve themselves through knowledge. I also bring a strong data background from my post-teaching career as a data analyst. Pull all of this together and I have come up with the motto – “Passion driven, data informed coaching to achieve personal goals”. I will work with you to understand who you are as a person and what your cycling goals are. Together, we will build a program to help you achieve your goals. I used the latest technology and software to analyze your performance, measure progress, and inform training decisions.

Testimonials

It's been about 3 months since we spoke on the phone after I watched Hunter's live webinar on riding after 50. His pick of Chris Hill was an excellent choice and we have made huge strides in 90 days in regards to fitness and power. Where 90 days ago I was doing group rides with the mindset of "hang on to the front as long as you can then finish best as you can", which entailed about 20-25 miles of P1/2 pace till I was dropped, to now this weekend staying with the front pack riding constantly in the top10 and yesterday even taking 5 good hard pulls on the front and getting loads of compliments. Those pulls were constantly 25-30 mph for 3-5 minutes. The fitness level and riding has even gained attention one of the local racing groups and I was asked to come race with them Jan1st, which I accepted! -Jim W.
