I began working with Dr. Kevin Bernstein in June of 2024. At this time, I had just been fully retired for 6 months at age 65. I gained weight over several years with a hectic work life that included much travel. I was spurred to action as I had agreed to meet up with some of my old Ironman Triathlon teammates to do a 325-mile gravel bike ride around Billings, Montana, mid-September. My beginning weight was 204. My goal was 185. So, I needed to lose 19lbs over 15 weeks. It's a very doable goal.
Some athletic history. Competitive swimmer in High School and College. I began triathlons, marathons, and open water competitions at age 45. I lost weight then, going from 220 to a low of 157 for my first Ironman in 2004. I did these competitions through 2014 and retired from Ironman racing after 23 finish lines, a mix of Full and Half distances. I found my sweet spot weight to be 180-185 lbs for those events. So, after retiring from competitions and a busy workload over the last 10 years, I gained 20 lbs. I continued to be very active cycling, but age and diet weren’t working anymore.
After some discussion of goals, Dr. Kevin developed a nutrition plan to burn off fat and maintain/build muscle. This consisted of hitting daily calorie targets with the right blend of Macronutrients (Protein, Fat, Carbs). This plan would allow me to hit my weight goal by September. He educated me on healthy food alternatives, foods I should eliminate, and those I should add. He recommended several supplements, sports nutrition, recipes, etc. to boost my athletic performance at the same time.
Following his plan, I met my body composition goals and improved my cycling FTP simultaneously. When I joined my old friends in September they were shocked at the transformation. These were very fit people, and I knew my work was cut out to ride with them. But after the weight loss and fitness gains, I was comfortably riding in the front 1/3 of the group daily.
Conclusions: Dr. Kevin has taught me a LOT about proper nutrition and how modifying my diet to one of clean fueling in the proper amounts, timing and nutrient mix would transform my body composition and allow me to improve my fitness levels. At 66yo, I’m riding as strong as I did at 10 years ago at the end of my Ironman days. I’ve been able to keep the body composition I was targeting last Sept for 5 months now and can still make improvements. I feel I can continue to increase my bike FTP and Vo2. That’s saying something at age 66. I’m so happy to have met and worked with Dr. Kevin over the past 9 months. His coaching and knowledge have been invaluable in helping me change my lifestyle.
