Background

After my military service in the US Navy, I looked for a sport to get back in shape after a lot of on-board ship living. Both of our next-door neighbors rode bicycles a lot. I joined in and this was my introduction to real cycling. Within 6 months, I began racing with them. Within a year, I won quite a few races and was upgraded to a cat 3! I continued commuting by bicycle, and riding and racing throughout college and into the working environment for about three years. A new work position limited my ability to commute via bike and during this time I took a break from riding and training. About ten years later, a new position closer to home became available and I was able to begin riding again. Many years later, I retired from the workforce and I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time and was asked to test Cervelo pre-production bikes. I upped my mileage to 10,000 miles/year while testing for Cervelo. Later, I got into product testing, which I still do, and cyclists began asking for my feedback on certain cycling products. These conversations slowly turned to “how am I riding,” “what do you think of my position on the bike,” and “how can I get faster?” My experience working directly with athletes on the bike, led me to become a certified bike fitter ultimately leading me to become a USAC Certified Coach. As a coach, it is my belief that if you want to maximize your full potential as a cyclist, a bike sizing/bike fitting is a recommended first step.

Coaching philosophy

I love helping athletes achieve their goals, whether mentoring a junior on his/her first ride, or coaching a group of seniors who have discovered the enjoyment of getting back onto a bicycle again after a 50-year break.

Maximizing training all starts with a good bike sizing and bike fitting. Having the right sized bicycle and a good bike fit allows you to be comfortable and relaxed. Being comfortable and relaxed will provide for pedal efficiency and maximize your riding and coaching experience. Once you are comfortable and confident on the bike you can more quickly achieve your whole potential.

When we meet, I will ask lots of questions so I understand your goals completely. Communication is king! Coaching is a partnership between coach and athlete. As a Certified Personal Trainer, I believe in a holistic approach to cycling, which includes strength training, stretching, and core work (the foundation for supporting yourself on the bicycle).

Athlete testimonials

- I’m 69 years young and live in Dana Point, CA. My goal was to do the Belgium Waffle Ride, a 140-mile gran fondo in and around San Diego. Training on my own, as I started increasing my mileage, I started having more and more pain, especially in the knees, hips and lower back. I spoke with several friends and each one suggested for me to go see Rick for a bike fit and then some coaching. Little did I know that this was the start of my journey. After a great bike fit, I was pain-free, but still couldn’t get over the hills, nor stay up on group rides. Back to Rick where he explained about power, power meters, managing your power and pedaling drills and how to do workouts in general. Rick initially gave me an FTP test in his studio and the result was 185W. He said I could do better and after several months of Rick’s coaching and me training, I was retested at 200W! During this time, I also lost several pounds and I am now able to stay up on group rides, able to get over the hills and completed my first Belgium Waffle ride (the shorter of the two but still an 84 miler with 8,000 feet of climbing) as well as I finished the Levi Gran Fondo as well as recently climbed Haleakala which is a 10,000-ft. climb! Thank you, Rick!

- I’m 73 and recently got a new bike to ride with my friends. Every time I got on the bike, I was in pain. I went to Rick for a bike fit and some coaching. After 2 months, I feel so much stronger and cycling is now much more enjoyable! In fact, out on the last ride with the same group of my friends, my power seemed to have increased especially on the climbs. I’m spinning 10 RPM faster and set new PR’s which I didn’t expect. Coach Rick’s technique for gaining power is something every cyclist needs to practice and, with Ricks help you will gain power as well as bike handling tips that will help in your quest to be better. This is why I came to Rick and I feel confident that he is qualified, trustworthy and knowledgeable not only with coaching but with all aspects of cycling. I have the greatest respect and can recommend Rick Schultz to all who love our sport.

I came in to discuss why I was being dropped by my friends. I'm a big guy, 6’2” 205lbs work out at the gym and in shape. Rick told me a bike fit is the first thing he'd recommend then on to coaching. He gave me Hunter Allen’s FTP test protocol and sent me on my way. I came back a day later and my Stages reported 254w. Rick then did a THOROUGH bike fit including new cleats, Rotor 2 In Power crank, Q-Rings and checked my OCP. Again, he sent me on my way and I came back with a big smile on my face saying 297w FTP. Rick discussed a coaching package and I signed up with PCG. We discussed my goals, one of them was to hit 300w FTP in 2019. After 3 weeks of training and a bike fit tweak, he sent him back out for my third FTP test. I called him excitedly telling him to look at my Training Peaks. 298w FTP! By the way I'm going, I will hit 300 early! Needless to say, my new goal is 350.
