Background

I have been involved in Cycling all my life as my father, who still coaches in El Salvador, was with the national federation and managed/coached teams during my childhood years. Once my brother and I learned how to ride our bikes, we used to race the individual pursuit in the backyard of our house! After helping with teams and the federation in all possible roles as a young boy, I then started to race as a junior in 1975 and made the Track Cycling National Team for the 2nd Central American Games held in El Salvador in 1977.

Although my racing career was short, my interest in Cycling has been non-stop. For over 40 years I've been involved in Cycling and have had an interest in coaching since the very beginning. I got my first heart rate monitor in 1991, attended my first USCF coaching clinic in 1992, and bought my first power meter in 2003.

Coaching philosophy

Drawing from both my Cycling experience and my engineering career in Silicon Valley, I have all my athletes establish goals, set a detailed complete training plan, and continuously re-asses and review the plans and results to accomplish and set new goals. I have learned coaching should encompass all factors that affect our athletic results: training, recovery, nutrition, data analysis, psychology, equipment, race tactics, fitting, aerodynamics, etc. By incorporating these factors into an athlete’s training plan and regimen so they are able to achieve the best possible results.

It’s also important to remember that in the end, Cycling is only a part of our lives and we all need to keep that into perspective. But for sure, we will have fun and create many lasting memories.
